Instantly minimizing flakes

Medicated shampoos like T/Gel are an effective way to take control of scalp flaking, but what about tonights big date? Never fear! Here are some quick tips for minimizing the appearance of dandruff. First, use a wet towel or shower to soak the scalp in warmnot hotwater for about 3 to 5 minutes. This helps to soften and loosen scales on the scalp so theyre easier to wash out. Then, shampoo with a product containing salicylic acid. This helps clear away remaining scalp buildup. Shampoo twice, massaging the scalp GENTLY for several minutes. Make sure you rinse thoroughly afterwards and let your hair air dry. Once its dry, give it a good, quick pass with a blow-dryer set on cool to help release any remaining flakes.

Blow dry? Or slow-dry?

Many of my clients with scalp conditions are hesitant to use a blowdryer. The secret is to avoid heat. Blow-drying with hot air can certainly irritate an itchy scalp. It can make flakes more apparent. So use your blowdryer to style your hair not quick-dry it. First, towel-dry or let your hair air-dry until just damp. Next, set your blow-dryer to the lowest heat possible. Use a diffuser nozzle for the gentlest drying and avoid applying heat to the scalp area. Once your hair has dried completely, set the dryer to cool and run it through hair and over the scalp to help remove any stray flakes.

Scalp psoriasis grooming tips

Scale buildup from scalp psoriasis can be frustrating. Try this technique for removing stubborn scale. First, use a wet towel or shower to soak the scalp in warmnot hotwater for about 3 to 5 minutes. Once the psoriasis scale has been softened, angle a round-toothed or fine-toothed comb [INSET: closeup of comb] against the scalp and comb in a gentle, circular motion. [Demonstrates] Make sure you do this slowly and carefully! Because removing scales too roughly could break the skin and lead to irritation. Once the scale is loosened, shampoo with a product containing salicylic acid to help clear away remaining buildup. Finally, use a blowdryer set to cool to remove any stray scale from the scalp and hair.
