Relieving an irritated scalp
Dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis can cause irritated scalps, however an irritated scalp can also be caused by a number of other things: low humidity, allergic reactions to hair products or even frequent shampooing.
Try these simple tips to help "ditch the itch":
-
If you consistently have an irritated scalp, you may be allergic to an ingredient in one of your styling products. Try eliminating frequently used products one at a time to identify the culprit. Note that it may take several days for symptoms of an allergic reaction to subside. Should reactions continue, consult your doctor for help identifying your specific allergy.
-
Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help increase hydration in the body.
-
Shampoo with lukewarm—instead of hot—water. Hot water may strip the scalp of the natural oils it needs to keep it from drying out.
Relieving an itchy, irritated scalp
Going to the pool? Be aware that pool chemicals may irritate sensitive scalps. Use a bathing cap or thoroughly rinse hair promptly after swimming.
Resist the urge to scratch, scratch, scratch. Although scratching relieves the itch, scraping the sensitive skin on the scalp may lead to infection. Aggressive scratching may also worsen existing seborrhoeic dermatitis or psoriatic lesions.
If your itching continues despite the use of anti-dandruff or medicated shampoos, consult your doctor or pharmacist. He or she will be able to provide you with a proper diagnosis and treatment options.
